✔️Are Your Fitness Goals S.M.A.R.T.?❓

Whenever a patient asks us about their workout regime, I always ask what's their goal and what are they trying to achieve? Is it to look good in a bikini? Is it to finish their first 5k?

I follow up with this question: are your goals S.M.A.R.T.? If so, is your workout catered to it?

S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, And Timely

Specific: Narrow down your goals so that you can have baseline of points that can steer you to a right direction.

"I want to run a marathon"

Measurable: Determine how you will measure your goal. Write down distance, time, weights (exercise weight and body weight), reps. The goal is to have a quantifiable number to keep track of progress.

"I want to run a marathon within 5 hours"

Attainable: You want to start off small achieve it and progressively strive for bigger goals. Do not expect to be able to run 26.2 miles if you never ran a 5k before!

"I want to run a marathon within 5 hours..but let's start with a 5k in under 40 minutes in 1 month"

Relevant: Ask yourself.."Why?" What is your motivation? Having a goal that speaks to you will increase your chances of achieving it.

"I want to do this to raise money for charity"

Timely: Set a deadline and meet it!

"I want to be able to run a marathon in 1 year"

When you hit all 5 points, write it all down and create a workout plan to meet it!

"I want to run a marathon in under 5 hours for charity in 1 year but right now I will try to run 5k in under 40 minutes in 1 month"
